Victor Hugo’s biography:Born in February 26, 1802 in Besançon in the North East of France, Victor Hugo is considered as one of the greatest writers of French literature. His father was a general under Napoleon, and the young Victor traveled extensively before settling with his mother. He then discovered the literature. In 1922, he married Adele Foucher, a childhood friend with whom he had five children. In 1822 he published Odes, for which he received a pension from King Louis 18th, and dedicated himself to writing. It publishes books, including The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the poetry collection as Voies intérieures, or theatres productions as Le Roi s’amuse . In 1841, he was elected to the French Academy. Seven years later, he became more involved in politics and he became a member in Paris. He wanted to be acandidate of the Republic, but he had very little support. Promoting anticlerical ideologies, he was forced into exile in Belgium, Jersey,and then in  Guernsey, before returning to France in 1870. During this time, he was very prolific and published several works: The Contemplations, Les Miserables, Les Châtiments, ect ...

Victor Hugo died May 22, 1885 at the age of 83 years. After a lavish funeral, he was exposed to the Parthenon. Socially committed, he was recognized as a person who has left the generations that have followed him, to develop political and social ideas. In advance of his time, he became an iconic character.

  Christopher Marlowe’ biography:Born in early 1564, Christopher Marlowe was an English poet, dramaturge and translator during the Elizabethan era. He lived in Canterbury with his mother and his father, a shoemaker. After his studies at the Corpus Christi College in Cambridge, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1594 although his origins were modest. Some time later, the young poet became a part-time secret agent for the government. His very first play, called Dido, Queen of Carthage, was writing when he was still at Cambridge. In 1587, he wrote Tamburlaine one of his first English play which was written in blank verse, and The Spanish Tragedy that  was considered as the new phase of the Elizabethan theatre. His others major works were The Tragically History of Doctor Faustus, the Massacre at Paris and wrote some well known poetry such The Passionate Shepherd and Hero and Leander. He also translated some works such as Amores from Latin to English using blank verse. During Marlowe’s life, many speculations fuelled doubts about his sexual orientation, his political or religious ideological politics as well as his connections with the royalty. On May 30th 1593, Marlowe died at the age of 29. Many people believed that Marlowe got stabbed by Ingram Frizer due to a fight between the two men. Frizer was pardoned considering he acted as self-defence. The reason of his death remains unsolved, though. Christopher Marlowe, who is considered as the father of the Elizabethan drama, contributed to the English literature using the blank verse, which is verses that does not rhyme, in his dramatic works, what did Shakespeare thereafter.

The passionate shepherd:

 1 Come live with me and be my love,
2 And we will all the pleasures prove,
3 That valleys, groves, hills, and fields,
4 Woods, or steepy mountain yields.

5 And we will sit upon the rocks,
6 Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks,
7 By shallow rivers, to whose falls
8 Melodious birds sing madrigals.

9 And I will make thee beds of roses,
10 And a thousand fragrant posies,
11 A cap of flowers and a kirtle
12 Embroidered all with leaves of myrtle:

13 A gown made of the finest wool,
14 Which from our pretty lambs we pull;
15 Fair lined slippers for the cold,
16 With buckles of the purest gold:

17 A belt of straw and ivy buds,
18 With coral clasps and amber studs;
19 And if these pleasures may thee move,
20 Come live with me and be my love.

21 The shepherd swains shall dance and sing
22 For thy delight each May morning;
23 If these delights thy mind may move,
24 Then live with me and be my love.

 English poem’s analysis: (à approfondir)The English poem was written during the pastoral tradition which emphasizes the beauty and safeness of the country life compared to the city life. As a picture of heavenly nature, the countryside is characterized by a state of happiness, romance and innocent love. Those elements are occurring in a natural setting where there is always peace. There are no worries or problems that the city could generates. In fact, the countryside is an idealization of the recklessness and of the peace of mind.Set in an undefined time, the poem accentuates on the moment present that only matters. The main character, a shepherd, asks to a woman to come with him having pleasure without suggesting a long investment or a true relationship with her. He only wants her to enjoy every moment that life offers to them. In reality, the shepherd is not very serious about the feelings he has for this woman. The woman is in fact the object of his desire. He is flighty and does not wish to get involved in a serious relationship. In effect, it implies that the protagonist only wants a pure sexual adventure with the woman which will not last.The first to the fifth verse of the poem express the will of the shepherd to bring the woman away with him. He invites her to discover the pleasure of the nature where they can enjoy themselves and spending time together without worries. He insists in order that the woman accepts. The allusion to have all the pleasure the nature can offer is mainly sexual. In fact, the shepherd wants her to come with him suggesting, a more polite invitation, which implies a reference to a superficial relationship based on carnal pleasures. The shepherd is passionate about the woman, as the poem’s title indicated, but could be refer to his fervent desire to possess entirely the lady in a sexual way. Because there is no explicit statement of love in the poem, we can deduce that the shepherd feels a purely sexual desire for this woman. From the sixth to thirteen verses, the shepherd suggests to his love interest that they could spend some time outside admiring the nature and watch the others shepherd feeding their animals in the fields. With this woman, they will just sit and enjoying the serenity of the environment. Furthermore, the shepherd talks about the birds who are singing which refer that the spring is coming up soon. In this verse in question, madrigals are mentioned which emphasise on the romantic relationship between the shepherd and the woman. In effect, madrigal was originated from Italy and was imported in England during the sixteenth century. This type of music can be the personification of the superficial romance of the woman and the man because a madrigal portrays a fickle relation with no future. It rather gives a futile point of view concerning their relation. Moreover, from the fourteenth to twentieth verses, the shepherd thinks that his lover deserves beds with roses to seduce her even more. The man is making a hyperbole when he talks about  giving her «a thousand fragrant posies», As a good fast-talking gentleman, he makes a lot of  grandiose promises that are unlikely to be held. From the twenty-first to the twenty-ninth verses, the shepherd promises to the woman that he wishes to dress her with the most magnificent clothes that exist. Her dress will be made by the wool of the sheep which will be pulled by the shepherd and her slippers will be a magnificent and comfortable for her. « With the purest gold» means he wishes that the woman he desires has everything she wants. According to him, she is worthy of all the most beautiful things in the world that he could offers to her. Likewise, the shepherd wants to clothe the object of his love with floral elements and sparkly gemstones or minerals. In the two last lines, the shepherd repeats his demand to the woman because he intends that she would accepts after having all these gifts and beautiful clothes. Even thought he thinks that repeating his will is not necessary, he does because he wants to convince her that it will be a great decision to come with him.Finally, from the verse twenty-one to twenty-four verse, the shepherd considers himself as a« swain». So, he qualifies his personality as a charming and perfect gentleman who is trying to convince the woman to have a sexual affair with him. He also that they will enjoy life during the month of May, which is a period where everything begins or rebirth. It is the time where love is a priority to love and happiness. In the other hand, the shepherd repeats the verse twenty-three in a slightly different way that at the verse nineteen. Effectively, his emphasis   on the «delights» instead of the «pleasures» which can explain that he wants to let the woman imagine what will happen if she comes with him. But, at the verse nineteen, he highlighted the fact that she will enjoy the moment shared with him to convince her.Love is a main them is this famous poem. It is a different love as we could imagine. It is one that implies a more sexual experience without a very true love. The main character wants to enjoy the present, the moment he is living now without any future plan or long time project. He tries to seduce a woman by giving her lovely clothes and beautiful, materials object symbolizing a possible interest for her.Concerning the nature, it is a lot explained in the poem, which outshines the theme of love. In fact, the nature is everywhere to personify the reproduction literally.  Words such as «birds, «mountains», «valleys» mean that nature send an explicit message, which bring a new perception in the poem: it is all about the procreation during the season of rebirth. It is time for love and having pleasure, which could implicitly express a sexual pleasure. In Brief, the shepherd, ties to attract the woman telling to come with him. Then, he decides to show her what she can expect from him. Besides, he reiterates what he wants explaining want the woman can have if she accepts his request. Ultima verba

La conscience humaine est morte ; dans l’orgie,
Sur elle il s’accroupit ; ce cadavre lui plaît ;
Par moments, gai, vainqueur, la prunelle rougie,
Il se retourne et donne à la morte un soufflet.

La prostitution du juge est la ressource.
Les prêtres font frémir l’honnête homme éperdu ;
Dans le champ du potier ils déterrent la bourse ;

Charlemagne taillé par Satan dans Mandrin ;

Tant qu’il se vautrera, broyant dans ses mâchoires
Le serment, la vertu, l’honneur religieux,
Ivre, affreux, vomissant sa honte sur nos gloires ;
Tant qu’on verra cela sous le soleil des cieux ;

... Quand même grandirait l'abjection publique
A ce point d'adorer l'exécrable trompeur ;
Quand même l'Angleterre et même l'Amérique
Diraient à l'exilé : - Va-t'en ! nous avons peur !

Quand même nous serions comme la feuille morte,
Quand, pour plaire à César, on nous renîrait tous ;
Quand le proscrit devrait s'enfuir de porte en porte,
Aux hommes déchiré comme un haillon aux clous ;

Quand le désert, où Dieu contre l'homme proteste,
Bannirait les bannis, chasserait les chassés ;
Quand même, infâme aussi, lâche comme le reste,
Le tombeau jetterait dehors les trépassés ;

Je ne fléchirai pas ! Sans plainte dans la bouche,
Calme, le deuil au cœur, dédaignant le troupeau,
Je vous embrasserai dans mon exil farouche,
Patrie, ô mon autel ! Liberté, mon drapeau !

Mes nobles compagnons, je garde votre culte ;
Bannis, la République est là qui nous unit.
J'attacherai la gloire à tout ce qu'on insulte ;

Ils ne sont plus que cent, je brave encor Sylla ;
S'il en demeure dix, je serai le dixième ;
Et s'il n'en reste qu'un, je serai celui-là !

French poem analysis: (à approfondir, faire plus de recherche)

On December 1852, a coup d’état took place in France by Napoleon Bonaparte. Consequently, he became the president of the Second French Republic and the last French monarch. Victor Hugo didn’t appreciate this situation and the way Bonaparte governed France. He was opposed to the situation of the country. He criticized the government of Napoleon and his against the stream ideologies bothered them. As a result, the famous poet was exiled in Jersey and wasn’t allowed to return in France. The poem called Ultima Verba was written by Victor Hugo one year after this major coup d’état. As it is clearly mentioned and written below the poem, Hugo was at Jersey, one year after the political changes. In fact, the French poet created this work to criticize the actions of Napoleon. On the other hand, he praised his country because he loved it. He also feels that the political situation will last and will never change.

From the first to the thirty-second verse, Victor Hugo explains the situation that occurred in France during this time because of Napoleon Bonaparte. He deplored the problems that were caused by him such the corruption, the enhancement of the evil and the misfortune of the society. « La prunelle rougie, la conscience humaine est morte, ce cadaver lui plait» refer to a diabolic President of the Republic who likes sorrow. He doesn’t feel pity for no one, and doesn’t have any feelings for others. Victor Hugo accused the government of Napoleon of corruption toward the people. In fact, the royalty, the bourgeoisie and the clergy were sharing all the richness of the country whereas the people were poor, were kept ignorant and were economically exploited. All the privileged people were wasting the resources while the population had to work very hard to live for a very little. The verse « Les prêtres font frémir l’honnête homme éperdu» indicates that the the clergy was in a certain way dishonest toward the people. They tried to control them to keep them uneducated. This problem advantaged them so them could direct them and maintain their immense power on them. The verse « Dans une main le sceptre et dans l’autre la pince» means that Napoleon Bonaparte governed the country, but at the same time, he was corrupting the country and kept the people in ignorance to exploit them in order to enjoy the luxury and a life of pleasure.

Federico Garcia Lorca:

Federico Garcia Lorca was born on June 5th 1898 in Granada, Spain. After finishing his high school, he went to University where he studied law and literature. That was during this time that he wrote his first book called Impresiones y paisajes. Involved in the avant-garde of his country, Garcia Lorca published a lot of poetry collections such as Romancero Gitano, one of his best known works. This major work regrouped many poems about roams including Preciosa y el aire. In effect, his poems are celebrating their own culture and they reflect a marginal people who are suffering because they are persecuted by the Spanish autorities.During the 20’s, he had a relationship with the great painter Salvador Dali, who rejected his advance. Then the poet became depressed because he suffered of his homosexuality. This dark period of his life coincided with the success of his poetry collections Romancero Gitano which reflected a paradox: he was forced to be the well known poet always strong and happy in the public eye, whereas he was feeling tormented and alone in his personal life. After a brief travel in the United States, he returned in his natal country, where he wrote some of his important works such as Asi que pasan cinco anos or Bodas de sangre between 1926 and 1936. In 1930, he directed the theatre company La Barraca and while he was touring with in Spain, he wrote the major work trilogy called Bodas de sangre.En 1936, when the Spanish civil war broke out, Gracia Lorca left Madrid and head to Grenanda, where he was shot by three anti-republicans. This was the 18th of August 1936. The reason and the motives of his decease remains controversial, and some people believed that his homosexuality played a major role in his death. On the other hand, it is said that his death was organised, because the authorities wanted to get rid of all the supporters of the Popular Front. A statue representing Federico Garcia Lorca is located in the Plaza de Santa Maria in Madrid. This sculpture reflects one of the greatest Spanish man of letters who had always been ahead of its time.

Preciosa y el aire analysis: (à appronfondir)

 The poem refers, as the main subject, a marginalised community of people called the Roms. Roms invaded different places around the world such as Asia, Africa, and North America. Also, they went more precisely in European countries like France, Russia and Spain.  These people live differently from other people. In fact, they are nomadic, they live day to day without any stress and they don’t know their origins. The live on streets and they don’t own a permanent home.  Their values and their perception of live are very different from the Western world. Roms are not materialists and they don’t believe that the work defines someone and its social class or even an achievement, unlike Western people.

Concerning their beliefs, there are more spirituals that those of Western people. They believe in miracles, in the wonderful and they love and care a lot about the nature. They think that we have to take care and focus on the beauty of the nature because it is perennial.  In brief, Roms understand that everything is ephemeral and don’t last forever. This strange community has been persecuted by the people who lived in the country that the Roms invaded. Those abuses have occurred because the Roms lived in streets, were not clothed like they should and they seemed lazy without any purpose in life to Western eyes.

However, Federico Garcia Lorca loved the Roms and he dedicated a collection of poems expressly for them.

The main character in this Spanish poem is a female rom called Preciosa. She is playing in the nature when the wind comes and changes into an evil spirit. The wind wants to possess the girl, but the end of the poem she managed to escape. Because the poet of this work, Federico Garcia Lorca, liked the roms he dedicated all poems collection to them. Preciosa y el aire reflects his interest for this marginal people. In fact, the poem talks about the rom traditions and the beliefs. We can divide the poem in three main parts. Fisrt of all, the initial situation shows the peaceful environment in which she is. The second part represents the arrival of the wind and its will to have power over the girl. The last parte shows when Preciosa gets rid of the wing and when she is out of danger. In the rom culture, the wind symbolizes the devil and a masculine instinct and attitude while a female rom represents the female attraction. Thus, when Preciosa is caught by the wind the poem explains that it want to possess the girl. Also, the roms believe that a woman could get pregnant to the strength of the wind. Therefore, it will be the devil who will father a child with a female rom. The verses «Abre en mis dedos antiguos, la rosa azul de tu vientre» show that the wind, according to roms, is a evil power and could be a harmful event for them. Moreover, the fear experienced by these people for the wind and his evil and strange power, is highlighted by the fact that Preciosa is trying to escaper from the possible possession of the wind. The verse       « Preciosa,corre, Preciosa!» expresses the panic of the in the author’s written. It is constantly repeated in the poem to give the impression that this situation in which the girl is taken is filled with anxiety and tension. In the same vein, in the beginning of the poem, the verses describe the tranquility of the nature, which is calm and safe. The female rom seems happy and stress free while playing. But, the situation radically changes when the wind comes. There is a lot more anxiety and tension when it appears, which underlines a compromise and darker situation.

Week 7

 This week, I chose my new Spanish poem called Preciosa y el aire by Federico Garcia Lorca. The subject of my poem talks about love of the nature but also about death. I will analyse that in my final project. I found some words or expressions that I didn’t know in Spanish to understand the poem better. Week 7

 During the March break, I have worked on my project. I’ve analysed my English poem and I found some unknown words to myself. I have made some research on the English poem background (the time during the poem had been written, the poem’s analysis). I found also unknown words in my French poem.

This week, I went to the library to find some books about Christopher Marlowe, the author of my English poem. I didn’t find something interesting that will help me for my project. I planned to go to the public library during the coming weeks.

 I asked some information to Humberto Campos, my Spanish teacher, and he told me that the theme on Spanish poem that I chose is about death instead of the love of nature. So, I have decided to change my Spanish poem, and I will choose another one that will talk about the love of nature as soon as possible thanks to Humberto’s help. When I will choose my new Spanish poem, it is obvious that I will advance in my work better

I found all the new words and it will help me to understand the poem and doing my analysis better. I think that I found some words that not used anymore (archaic words, evolution of the language) and some word that belongs to Spain only. I will ask some information to Humbertos Campos to make sure that I am on the good path. I also found the historical background behind this poem that could be the gypsies which could be the poem’s analysis too. I will make some research on that during the March break.

Research Journal Assignment 1

February 18th, 2010

 Week 5

During the past week, I made some research about what kind of poems I will choose to do my final project. I went on Internet to see some Spanish poem about Camilo José Cela but its poems didn’t interest me a lot. So, I decided to research poems about Federco Garcia Lorca and I found a poem called Romance de la Luna which will be my poem that I will analyse for the final project.

 Concerning the English poem, I looked in some books that I’ve already had such as Complete sonnets from William Shakespeare but nothing grabbed me. Then, I made som research on my second books 100 best-loved poems edited by Philip Smith and I found my chosen poem: The passionate shepherd to his love from Christopher Marlowe.

 Finally, I chose my French poem by looking into the Anthologie de la poésie française by Georges Pomidou. My poem is called Ultima verba written by Victor Hugo.

Declaration of Intention Assignment

Since I started the program Arts et Lettres profil Langues, I was introduced by a lot of aspects and I have acquired many skills concerning languages. In fact, I learned linguistics terms, cultural aspects of the English language and stimulating my creative side by doing some short stories or clusterings. I also improved my vocabulary and my grammar in Spanish and I discovered a lot of about French, English and Spanish literature. Moreover, I have been introduced by Translation which was a good preview for what I will do at the University. But, the most important thing that I learned is to make relevant, complete and developed researches and analyzes on major works or famous personalities. Thank to these analyzes, I became more aware of all their contribution in the cultural world and I have now a better general knowledge about languages.

   For my final project, I want to choose a poem from a well know artist from France, England and Spain. Then, I will analyze them in depth which means that I will define some local words or expressions, old fashioned words that are not use anymore nowadays, interpret the figures of speech and lexical fields. I will also talk about the context in which each poem has been written if necessary. I will analyze how each peoet have some similarities in their writings even though they have their own style and they express themselves differently. To finish, I will also add a mini biography of each poets. I will integrate a lot of skills that I have acquired during my sessions in CEGEP. To define the local or national words or expressions, I will use what I have learned in my Initiation à des notions linguistiques de la langue anglaise courses and for the interpretation of the figures of speech and the lexical fields, I will integrate some skills that I learned in my Courants littéraires courses. Furthermore, from all that I learned in my Spanish courses will help me to write a text in this language with a good vocabulary and a good grammar and finally I will use some element learned in the Contexte sociohiostorique et culturel de la langue anglaise to try to interpret the cultural or historical apects of the poems. To sum up, I will bring a lot of knowledge from a good part of my all courses to make a great and detailed synthesis in order to provide my final project as perfect as I can.

   I have chosen this topic because poems have always interested me because they convey feelings, emotions and some things that we still don’t admit in the life of every day. Plus, they reflect sometimes values of a people and also his sorrow and his joy. I would like to  I hope to became more educated on archaic words, the local words of each country, learning about the historical and the social events behind the poems and deepen my knowledge on linguistic and on the French, English and Spanish culture.

My working timetable

Week 5: choose my works (poems in French, English and Spanish)

Week 6: analyze the Spanish poem (find words, expressions, local words, historical events)

Week 7: analyze the English poem

Week 8: analyze the French poem

Week 9: find information about the three poets

Week 10: combined together the information about poems, poets, interpretation, etc…

Week 11: start writing the final project

Week 12: finish writing the final project

   I will find my information about the poets, the poems, the words, the linguistic, the socio-historical aspects that was happening during this time, the interpretation and so on in reference books, biographies, linguistics books, historic books. I could also use languages books, such as grammar works. To finish, I will use some safe Internet web sites to do some research too.

The final project was to choose a subject and choose five works of arts, compare them, write little information about the artist and explain what those five works of arts have all linked with the subject chosen. I liked like this course as the first one because now I am more aware of the importance of arts in the world. With art, we can analyse our society, our values, our beliefs, our way of living and knowing others cultures too.

Courants littéraires: rupture et continuité

 I learned the literary currants that occurred in the French literature suc as the Classicism and the Romantism. Also, I learned some emerging currants such as the Chick Lit, Lad Lit or the Migrant Literature. I learned which authors that influenced the French literature such as Victor Hugo, De la Martine, Balzac, etc…

This course very instructive, but I’ve already learned in high school the literary currents in the 16, 17and 18 centuries

Productions visuelles

  I learned how to use and take pictures with a camera obscura, use Photoshop to modify a picture of something that already exists. Moreover, I had to create an animation on the computer. For the final project, I had to create again an animation and add some modified pictures. I really didn’t like this course because I had some difficulties doing it, the projects didn’t inspire me at all and I’m not very at ease using the computer for this kind of things.

 I learned the basics to communicate. I learned the present tense of some verbs and the way I can introduce me, etc…

I had some grammar exam and I had an oral presentation as the final evaluation

I was very interesting to have a little knowledge of this language and I realized how much there are similarities between English and German.

Espagnol 2

 I learned more vocabulary, the imperfecto and the pasado. I had how described some events that happened in my past with the help of those verbs tense. I listened to some songs and filled the missing words in those songs. I had grammar exams and as a final evaluation, I had to do an oral presentation on a famous artist. I really enjoyed this course because I became more at ease to communicate and write some events in my life. Plus, I enriched my vocabulary.

                                                           Espagnol 3

 I learned a lot of verbs tense such as the imperativo, the subjontivo, the futuro, etc…

I also enriched even more my vocabulary. I had grammar exams and two oral presentations do to in this course. I really learned a lot in this course because I had to memorize a lot of verbs tense. It confirmed my interest for this language because now I am more at ease to commnicate and write better.

The true story of the three little pigs

        Three little pigs were living in a small village in a far country. Cory the older, one was a strong, brave and proud little pig. He was living with her two little sisters Peggy and Lenny since their parents died in the slaughterhouse. He loved very much his siblings and has always protected them.  Peggy, the older sister was very beautiful and liked cooking and taking care of the house. Lenny, the little one was shy, not as pretty as her older sister but liked to teasing people and laughing. The Pig family were very happy together and were united.

             One day, in the middle of spring, The Big Bad Wolf came in the little village. By just seeing his big white sharpened teeth, everybody was afraid to the idea of being eaten by the newcomer. The rumours said that The Wolf was a black, gigantesque and very mean animal who didn’t feel sorry for the little children and destroyed the villager’s house. The Wolf had fun to terrorize the villagers and stole the fruits and vegetables in the market. The Pig family was anxious to meet the Big Bad Wolf because they knew that the wolves adored eating pigs so they stayed at home for a while.  Fortunately, they have some reserves in their basement in order to subsist for a few weeks.

            In the end of the spring, The Big Bad Wolf was told by a frightened villager who wanted not to die that there was a house where three pigs are leaving there. By hearing the news, The Wolf went to Pig’s house. When the little pigs hear The Wolf coming toward them and destroyed their wooden house, they got scared and decided to run away together in the forest. Disappointed, The Big Bad Wolf had other plan in his head….

           The next day, the three little decided to take a revenge of The Wolf because they had enough that he scared the villagers. They planned to do something that would humiliate him and that he will never come back again. Cory had the idea to build a house for each of them with different material to prove to The Big Bad Wolf that he was not as strong as he thought. Peggy, the cooker of the family decided to make a house of candies with more sugar than usual. She spend a lot of time put the tones of sweets into a multicolour home which would attract even more The Wolf. Lenny, the funny girl, build a simple wooden house with a bucket of water which will pour in The Wolf when he will open the door. Finally, Cory, the courageous one, tried to build a brick house.

          In the same day, all the curious villagers came to see what will do The Big Bad Wolf. Some people were anxious and were afraid for the three little pigs while others were thrilled to know that if the three little pigs would succeed, they would get rid of The Big Bad Wolf. The Wolf was hidden in the forest trying to watch what kind of challenge he had to do to prove to everyone that he was the better. Unfortunately, he was not happy because he was too far from the three little pig’s house.  When he approached to the crowd, he saw the first house in candies. He couldn’t resist to all these candy and forgot completely his idea of eating the little pigs. He was just thinking at all these sweets. While he sampled the candies, Peggy, ran towards the crow and hid herself. When The Big Bad finished all the candies, he felt filled with all these sweets and had the impression that he would fall asleep. Then, he decided to go to bed in the forest.

           The next morning, The Big Bad Wolf was very determined to take revenge of the three little pigs because he was frustrated that he could not eat the little pig girl du to his love for candies. He wanted to be respected and being considered as the nastiest animal to rule the village like he wanted. The crowd of villagers was already here and was waiting for The Wolf. The mean animal approached carefully to the second, wooden-made home. Lenny was watching the Wolf’s arrival and was ready to leave before the animal could come in the house. All happened very fast. As soon as The Big Bad Wolf opened the door rapidly the bucket of water directly landed in his head and wetted all his body. Lenny went out of the house by the door and ran towards the villagers while The Big Bad Wolf, feeling humiliated, ran away in the forest as the crowd was whistled of enjoyment.

     The following day, The Wolf was more and more scared to undergo the plan of the three little pigs. It left only a house and the Big Bad Wolf took back courage and decided to eat the last pig. Under the glance of all the villagers, the tried to destroy the brick house that Corey had built. He pushed the door with strength but it didn’t open. Then, he made a decision to push the brick walls. The more he was pushing, the more the walls fell in small pieces, until that a very big piece fell on his head and knocked him out. When he woke up, he stood up and saw that everybody was watching him. He started crying of shame and walked low head to the forest. He thought to himself that he would never be a terrible wolf and that he would never be like his pack wanted him to be. He stopped walking, turned over and talked to the crowd. He admitted that he wasn’t really mean and horrible. He only wanted to scared people so that his pack would be proud of him and then accept him as a courageous wolf. He promised to leave the village the next morning day. Everyone and more precisely the three little pigs were very sad to know that The Big Bad Wolf was not so mean and scary than they thought. The came to a decision that the Wolf could stay with them to be happier.

        The day the wolf was about to leave, all the habitants of the village and the three little pigs went to the forest and told him the good new, The Wolf jumped of joy and excitement. He thanked them from the bottom of his hearth and gave his word that would be kind and helpful to everybody. So, The Big Bad Wolf, who changed his name for The Sweet and Gentle Wolf, became calm and pacifist with the village’s residents. Finally, the three little pigs lived like before as a united and loving family and all the villagers lived happy in the far country till the end of all time.

Final project

Enzo and Marion

      In a little village near Sudbury, two 14-years-old teenagers were friends since kindergarden. Even though they were in High school, they were always inseparable. Enzo and Marion were like brothers and sister. They had a beautiful complicity and shared everything together. As the years were passing, the more they got older, the more Enzo was falling in love with Marion. He saw her differently than before but he didn’t dare to tell her his feelings. He was afraid that she didn’t love him too and was anxious at the idea of being hurt. So, Enzo decided to say anything and stay friend with her as they have always be.

    One summer, Marion went to a trip in the United Stated with her parents. Marion was sad to leave but was hopeful to see Enzo when she will arrive.     But, Enzo was even sadder, almost depressed just thinking that they would be separated for a long time. He spend  all the month of July, walking on the streets, playing with  his dog, watching television and thinking all the time about Marion. He thought about her smile, her blue eyes, etc...

Then, he decided to declare his love to Marion as soon as she will get back to her trip in the United States. To simplify his task, he wrote her a poem. He wrote all his thoughts and his desire to be on her side. He said to himself that even if she doesn’t love him the way he loved her, he didn’t care because he could not stand not telling to Marion his feelings anymore.

  When, Marion arrived in the little village, she run to Enzo’s house and ring the door bell. She was impatient to see her friend. When Enzo opened the door, Marion and he hugged themselves with joy. Then, Enzo took Marion’s hand and lead her to the river. They walked a long time hand in hand as Marion was talking about the trip in California, but Enzo didn’t really listen to her. He was a bit nervous at the idea to give her the poem. He was wondering how he could introduce the poem to her… when Marion stopped walking with a light of anxiety in her face, looked at her into his eyes and started talking:

-        What do you have Enzo, you seem nervous. What is the matter, you can tell everything to me.

-        Oh, no! Don’t worry about me. I’m fine. I’m just really happy that you got back and it is nice to see you again. I missed you.

-        Me too, I missed you.

-        Really! How much did you miss me?

-        A lot. I was thinking of you everyday, Enzo. I think that is normal because we are best friends since forever.

-        Yes, indeed. But you don’t feel something stronger for me than friendship? I mean, if you thought about me during your whole vacancy, I didn’t stop thinking of you when you were gone, maybe it’s because we could be more than friends, could we?

-        I don’t know. I love you Enzo, I really do. But, I’ve never thought that we could be more than friends…

-        But, I’ve already thought about that…

-        ….

-        Listen, I have to go home now. Just before I leave I would like you to read this.

-        What is it?

-        It is a something, which I think, would please you. Promise me that you would think about our discussion.

-        I promise. But Enzo, don’t be mad at me. I love you as I never loved someone in my whole life. Unfortunately, I’ve never realize if our relationship was just friendship or something stronger. I will think about that.

-        I know. Please, remember that I don’t force you at all. It is your own decision, OK? If you don’t love me the same that I love you, well, things won’t change; we will stay best friends forever.

      Marion nodded and Enzo took her hand again up to her house. He kissed on her cheek and went home. During the night, Marion thought about the discussion she had with Enzo. She missed him when she was in the United States and was unable to not thinking about him. Also, she omitted intentionally to say to her friend that she was a bit in love with before she left the village and when she returned, just seeing he again, made her hearth beating stronger. Moreover, when he kissed her goodbye, she was barely able to breathe!!!        She was shy to tell him her feelings but this afternoon he almost admitted his love for her… and she couldn’t be happier.

In the morning she woke up and she hastily opened the envelope in which there was a pale blue sheet of paper and she started to read Enzo’s poem:

Dear Marion you are my friend

Since we first met in the kindergarden

As the days are passing

I think, for you, I am falling

Your lovely smile is, for me, a sunshine

So I would like you to be mine

It would be a pleasure and joy

To be a part of your life

You mean everything for me

And I dare to declare my love for you

I love you,

Your friend Enzo

    The following day, Marion went to Enzo’s house and together they walked slowly to the river. Enzo was pleased to see her and hopeful that she will announce what he was expecting whereas Marion smiled at her friend and hugged him tight whereas and said:

-        Enzo, I really thought about our last discussion and I also read your poem.

-        And, have you taken a decision?

-        Yes, I took my decision. First f all, I have to say that I have been feeling something strong for you since a long time but I was too shy to admit my love to you. And now that I know you love me…

-        Yes, I love you Marion.

-        I love you too, Enzo.

    Marion came closer to Enzo, looked his green eyes and let Enzo kissed her. They stayed in the arms of each other a long time close to the river. Enzo felt relieved that Marion was in love with him and very happy to spend lovely days with her, talking about their future and the little that is happening everyday for the eternity.

Marion, on her side, was overjoyed to be with someone who is so kind and sweet than Enzo. She realized how much she loved him and wished she could spend the rest of her life in his arms.

Imaginary dialog of a scene on the college yard

-        Didn’t you notice why is Rachel s acting like that?

-        No. Well, that girl was always weird.

-        I know but she seems so depressed, isn’t she?

-        Maybe because Patrick broke up with her two weeks ago.

-         You might be right… She loved him so much and now he has a new girlfriend…

-        Yes, she looks nice, though.

-        Are you kidding me? She looks like… Well. I’d say nothing. Rachel and Patrick were cute together. Patrick’s new girlfriend is not intelligent at all and she acts like a Hollywood starlet.

-        If you think so.

-        Anyway, can we change subject, please? Just to talk about this girl makes me want to vomit.

Journal entry 2

Time is going so fast that I can’t reach it

Time is vicious it kills the persons you love the most

Time doesn’t let you enjoy live deeply

Time is going so fast that I can hardly breath

 I barely spent time with you because Time is running

I want to share things with you but Time is not waiting for me

The moment I enjoy the rays of sun the night shadows the day

The moment I reach my hand towards you you vanish

And Time is grinning to me

If I  could have stoppped the  Time for only a day

And then you will be able to show me  the happiness in this world

If I  could have stopped the Time  for only a day

And then you will be able to take my hand and lead me beyond clouds

If I could have stopped the Time for only a day

I could be with you for always

Letting go

 Sometimes, letting go and forget about a situation for a moment to focus on youself. It was not so easy o does that but you have to because of your health and well-being. Relaxation is a good idea to take care of yourself and a bad week or a argument with someone. Relaxing could be a walk in the forest, reading a book, doing exercise, taking a bath or watching a movie. It could be a travel in another country and enjoying the sun, the blue ocean, the museums, the food, etc…

 Letting go could be the acceptation of yourself as you really are. Sometimes, it is difficult to love you. Your body, your personality can make you shy because you would have liked to be different, like for example, thinner, funnier, more expressive, etc…

However, you have to appreciate you as you are and it will come with time. Accepting yourself would mean that you love you and you will be able to love other people. You would be able to respect you and find happiness.

 Finally, letting go makes you feel free of all these problems in your life. Letting go also means that you can put aside your problem and think at yourself for a while. After that, sicknesses, anxiety or sadness will vanish suddenly and you would feel better and lighter

Me/ Myself/I

 I am a tall and thin girl with black and long hair. My eyes are black and I am tan- skinned. My favourite activities are reading books and spending time with my family. For me, reading is an escape where I can be alone a enjoy life. Knowing different countries or ways of life are very interesting for me. Moreover, when I’m spending time with my family, I’m very happy and together we are talking a lot or we are going out.

Education is very important for me and I want to go to university to obtain a great education because learning means liberty to me.

Dominant impressions on a painting

           As I saw the painting I decided that the nucleus of the clustering would be «Peaceful ». Then, some words came up in my mind such as freedom, harmony and sea. The blue on the painting meant for me a calm place with no stress. Moreover, the large boat seems at his place between the water and the sky. Peaceful make me think about the biosphere which all its elements are in sync. When you are peaceful with yourself and with the others, you are feeling free and happy. The sea is also a calm place because when you go to the sea is to get a rest and energize you. Finally, I think of the word «boat» because, first a boat was on the painting but for me, when you are in a boat in the middle of the ocean, you feel good and in peace with yourself.

 The proverb that I chose is “Faith will move mountains” because when you strongly believe in something you can do anything even though it is quiet impossible. The power of the thought is stronger than we think. In fact, a lot of people have visualized and convinced themselves that they will reach their goal some days, and they did.

Sometimes, when I want to achieve my purpose or my wish, I say to myself that I will reach what I want. Usually, it works, but I have to admit that sometimes I have to work hard on some thoughts.

 I think that if you really believe in something such as God, anybody could change your mind. Then, you will be able to reach what you have ever wanted from the bottom of your heart. When you have faith in someone or something you can change the world even if it is a small change. You can improve the way people are living, changing a bit of their life and make them happier.

Reflections on the Trial-Web Shift

 When I did the Trial-Web Shift, my Sign Mind and my Design Mind are working together and helped me to invent new vignettes. First, I did the clustering and I realized that all of a sudden, an idea came up to my mind. I think the idea which came up was the work of my Design Mind. I started visualizing the main idea of my story. Then, I started writing with the help of the clustering. At that moment, my Sign Mind was working because I could think about the logic and the sense of the sentences and the text that I was creating.

 The nucleus of the clustering was «web». I began to write the word spider which is related with this animal. I also thought about the «Web» on the Internet which has contributed to the progress and the technology and where we can find a lot of information.

Class notes

Design mind versus Sign mind

 Sign mind:

  Located in the left hemisphere of the brain, logic, structures thoughts, organization of information, puts words together, synthesizes and orders ideas, sequence

 Design mind:

 Located in the right hemisphere of the brain, pictures, emotional, feelings, no order, creativity, images

How to write a play

1 act play

Before inventing a play, we have to see an acted play to be able to format and tell the story in only a setting or one short act to really engage the audience. Also, we have to describe and know our characters, before writing the play, even though the descriptions won’t be a part of the play in order to write the dialogs accurately. Finally, we have to draft our script and ask some friends to act it out to know how it feels, how it flows and use the stage well.

Structuring a play

The structure of a play begins by an exhibition which the explanation of the background of the characters and the story. It represents 15 per cent of the whole play. Then, there is the rising action which is the story development, where the actions are rising and rising again. The climax is the culmination of the story. The climax is followed by the following actions which wrapped up from the climax and all that is happening there. We don’t have to rush when it comes to the following actions; it must be slow. Finally, there is the denouement which is the unavailing.

Writing dialogs for a play

We have to bring like into dialogs because when we write dialogs, they are not to be read but to be spoken. The dialogs should fit the characters and have to be written like the way they are talking. We have to make reality into the dialogs and they have to express something visually.

How to write a play script

To write a play we should include a title page, our name, our address, our e-mail, our telephone number and we have to copywrite the material, except for the title which other people can use and reuse. After that, we have to format the play which means that we have to center our characters’ name on the page in capital letters. The lines of the dialogs must be left handed marge of the play, the actions should be justified to the right marge of the page.

To conclude, the stage directions that include entrances and exits should be done in the standard format of the writing where there is no acting’s areas.

Log Book

Toy (Reflections)

 When I wrote about my favourite which was Lego at the time I was a little girl, I talked about what this toy brought me and how it made me be as I am now.  I also wrote that this Lego has increased my capacity of imagining things and develop my inventing side. On the other end, I analysed the psychological side of my favourite toy. I realized that it helped me to have more dexterity and being able to use my hands better.

 When I wrote the child’s version of my favourite toy I mainly thought about the emotional side of the Lego. I talked about what makes happy and the members of my family that I really love. I also described what was going on my mind; I imagined a magic world with a royal family. Finally, I just wrote about an imaginary world where everything was perfect and where everybody was happy ever after.

                                               Journal entry 1

The right side of our brain is the Design mind that is used for the creativity, learning languages, arts, writing, tje capacity of expressions, etc…

The left side is called Sight mind, is used for the logic and rational aspects of life such as mathematics or science… orders thoughts too.

My life

I was born in Canada but my parents didn’t. In fact, my father was born in France and my mom is from Mauritius Island. My parents have always talked about their life in their own country which was interesting to me to learn. My perception of life has been influenced by their stories. I am now more open-minded than the majority of other people on the same age than myself. Learning hoe people are leaving in others countries such as their values or their mentalities amaze me a lot. It is great to know that we are all lucky to live in such a good place as Canada is.

My impressions of the writing in class

I liked the experience. I really enjoyed it. It felt like I was writing very fast without realizing about what was going around me.

My opinions on the pages 1 to3

I never thought that we have actually the capacity of writing well from our childhood. I thought that we have the capacity of writing in learning specifics techniques… To write well you have to develop a part of the brain that hasn’t been used before. Furthermore, the more you write the more you will become better and writing will be easier for you. Writing is inner so you just have to practice it. I have also learned that writing and the way you are expressing yourself define you.

Letting go and Time (Reflections)

 Letting go:

 When I was writing about this subject, I talked about what I heard about letting go. I learned the consequences of the stress which can causes diseases if you don’t let go some things that occur in your life. I suggested some activities that could be a great opportunity to forget your problems for a moment. Besides, I suggested that if you accept yourself you will be able to love yourself and see the world differently.

I didn’t think about what I was writing. I just let me write what letting go means to me as a person who has some difficulty to let go sometimes. I’m a kind of girl who is usually anxious and stressed. As soon as I let go I feel relief and better in my skin because all my trouble are away and I simply enjoy life.

 I think that the others writers have written things very personal and sad. The writing was simple but it expressed all the emotions the writers felt. I learned a lot of the others people in my class and now I would never see them the same way because they shared with us intimates events that happened in their life.

 My poem reflects a part of me in a sense in which sometimes I am a bit pessimist and I often think about negative things. Sometimes, I feel very well and happy so I am writing beautiful things because I am more positive. In brief, my writing and my poem are reflecting my personality. Plus, I can express myself and write about things that happen in my life that I don’t want to share with other people such as my parents or my friends.

It is the same way for the others writers. Their writing expresses their hopes, pains, thoughts, etc…

Finally, the clustering let people write everything that go thought their mind without thinking about the syntax, the grammar, etc…

 I learned that I am pretty good in writing and that I should develop that capacity. Maybe it would help me put down my thoughts without being judge or criticize by others people.

Reflection on Chapter 1

I totally agree with the chapter because that we have an inner ability to create and imagine things. Unfortunately, we lost these skills because we learned at school to be more logic. For my own experience, I often experienced difficult time when it came to write about something. I had blanks and didn’t know where I should begin. I’ve already see little children having no problem to invent stories or plays effortlessly because they feel free to use their imagination. Later, because school have forced to do their process of writing with logic, they lost their interest to give free rein to their imagination and they don’t like writing anymore.

 Concerning the Sign mind and the Design mind, it could help writing better. It could be easier for us to let our mind works and then use this method to succeed in our writing. Personally, the more you try to not find sense in your writing, and then restructure it to make more logic, the more you’ll improve you skills to communicate your thoughts.

Reflections of my recent writing

     When I did my final project or when I wrote my play, I realized that I improve myself. I had more inspiration, more ideas and it was easier to write and structure my thoughts. At the beginning of the session, I needed to improve my writings and also I had to develop my ideas, my creativity. Now, I have the feeling that is easier to me to invent stories and I improved my English even thought I still need to work on it. To sum up, all the writings that we did in class or as homework helped me to be better when it comes to write with originality, with a structure and with easiness. My skills to write texts, stories and even reflections have improved and my writing is more fluent.
