Introduction to the Course Editar  0  2 Introduction to the Course

Welcome to our course. I am looking forward to getting to know you as we explore ways to use ICTS for classroom teaching and for professional development. I am a language specialist, who has learned to deal with technology to bring something meaningful and enjoyable to you.

I am not a computer "techie" by trade or formal education. My undergraduate degree is in English as a Second Language. My interest in Computer Assisted Language Learning began some years ago when I began working at Centro Regional of San Miguelito. I love technology, saw great potential in using computers as a tool to enhance my teaching, and have been hooked ever since. I have worked extensively with computer applications for classroom teaching, and have long been involved in teacher training and profesional presentations in instructional technology. If you are interested in more information as to my professional credentials and experience.

When I am not teaching, you'll find me spending time with my husband, looking in on our elementary school kids , and spyping with my friends who live in United States . Among other things, I like to read, take long walks, travel and meet new people. So, that is a little background about me. I look forward to getting to know you better over the next few weeks, and trust that this course will meet your expectations.

Course Objectives:

  • Get to know one another: Who are we professionally? Who are our students? How do we use computers in our teaching? Why are we participating in this course? What are our expectations ?
  • Promote an atmosphere which encourages participation and professional development among all course participants and allows for enough flexibility to meet the expressed needs of participants as the course progresses.
  • Provide participants the opportunity to explore a wide range of on-line resources in a variety of content areas which can be integrated into classroom teaching.
  • Examine techniques for designing classroom materials to take advantage of the technological resources that exist today. These techniques differ in some ways from those used in a paper-based environment.
  • Explore ways to find additional on-line resources for use in the classroom and to tailor those resources to fit the instructional needs of your students.
  • Look at the issues of evaluating (and helping students learn to evaluate) technological resources.
  • In the process of exploring ICT content resources, try out different tools (applications) for delivering and discussing course content.
  • Create materials and develop activities, specifically tailored to participants' individual teaching situations, for immediate use in the classroom
  • Engage in ongoing discussion as we proceed through the workshop and develop a pool of resources and insights which can be shared among all participants.
  • Develop professional relationships among the participants which will continue beyond the time frame of the workshop. This will be facilitated by the completion of group assignments. Welcome to the course. I look forward to working with each of you!

Computer Assisted in Second Language Learning

We and the kids are on a world that is on a globalization process, the main reason to learn a new language is to communicate.

We can find help with computers and technology to learn a new language for example we can watch videos, documents, gathering information from different web sites, with no time limit because there is a lot of information on Internet.

But there are some disadvantage of computers is that not everybody have one, and not everybody have computers skills.

I saw the video and I agree with it because if teachers use computers with their children, they use another way to communicate. Also students will feel more interested to use a second language to communicate at class.

I saw the video and there are a lot of possitive thinks about Computer Assisted in second language learning, but a thing that is not mentioned in the video is the commitment of the student using this tool for learning. Nowadays is easy to have access to computers or online systems with all the technology that includes cellphones, tablets and laptops, almost all the schools have computers for the students, also there are a variety of prices in the market so the students can buy it with even monthly payments.

I do agree with everything presented in the video. Nevertheless, if we consider schools in Panama sometimes the scenario is different. In a private schools such as the one I work at, students and teachers have a wide variety of technology at thier disposition. Not only the tools ,but also the people who can fix any technical problem that can occur. On the other hand, it is true that the government help schools by giving donations and computers to schools and student body, courses and tuition assistance, but sometimes the equipment and labs need to be fixed and there help or solution takes a long time to appear.
Also, the time spent in the labs is very little, and in worst cases are never used.
It would be wonderful that every child and every teacher could have a teaching environment like the ones presented in the videos.

In this video we observe differents ideas about computer assited in second language learning, some advantages and desadvantages in it.
Althought the advantages are more than desadvantages, but in our real life of our public education here in Panama the desadvantages are more.
Most of our school have computers that is true, but most of them aren´t working. In the classroom are a lot of students and they have to work, at least five in each computer. And most of the time the computer are only for computer classes not for English classes.
I agree with the use of technology and I would like to work with it because I think that for our students it is very boring English class, because they
do not understand what the teacher is talking about or what are they reading. Nevertheless with the use of technology their motivation in second language learning will encrease.

as i could see in the video technology give a lot of benefit for students to learn a second language, as we know the internet give the oportunity to cumuinicate in many way: by e-mail, facebook, twitter and many other programs that some of them can have a videcall. also the new cellularphones has a lot of advantages because they have the same computer programs . But the technology have some desanvantages too. why?. because it mean to spend money in many ways(buying a computer, paying for the internet service, computer technical support).
I agree that technology is a good way to teach a second language because it make the class more interesting and fun, so students will be involve in the class and will learn more.

Comments about the video: COMPUTER ASSISTED IN SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING

Currently, technology is a very important part of the teaching and learning process. Taking advantage from computers in classroom lets teachers and students to get better opportunities, more interesting and fun classes, and it also helps students to be updated all the time; however there are some disadvantages, and we must be careful in order to get just benefits from technology.
I´m agree with the use of technology in second language learning, but really, here in Panama, our educational system is still in process of achieving advances such as all students, both public and private schools have access to computers in their educational process. I really hope, one day, a great improvement and development in our system, for all teachers and students.

Comment on: Computer Assisted in Second Language Learning video
I personally agree with this video. That the profits that you get from a computer as a tool to learn a second language are limitless. In some private schools where there is organized teams with technology support, training in-service to the stuff in the use the technology the results are tangible in the students. There is a different scenery for public education. I feel that looking around at our reality; there are a lot of lacks where we need to come together with. I Just think how different my class would be if our technology support isn’t one of the weakest themes.

VIDEO: COMPUTER ASSISTED IN SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNING
I have to say that the use of computers in Second Language Learning is very helpful because students can comprehend better a topic with the use of technology, taking in mind that on computers we have audio and video. I agree with all the advanteges of the use of technology. But on the other hand, we should face the situation in our schools. For example, I have the experience about two different places: private shools and public schools. In private schools technology is available every time you need , we can start a topic about litareture and finish with this topic at the lab watching an interesting video about some story, what is amazing, but in public schools sometimes students do not have enough computers in their computers labs. then the process of learning becomes tidious and boring . So in summary , technology is a very helpful tool for teaching a second language in our classrooms if it is available.
THANKS

This video is very interesting because it gives us many reasons to use technology while teaching and learning a second language. To communicate in a second language is very important these days to have better job opportunities and to succeed in life. Sometimes, our students are not motivated or interested in learning a new language, that´s why we as teachers need to look for different and interesting strategies to help our students in the process of learning a new language. The use of technology in second language teaching and learning offers us many resources and authentic materials to motivate our students and improve their communicative skills in a new language. It is true that in our public schools we face many problems trying to use technology because of the lack of good resources, but we have to continue trying just as we are doing here today. The resources are limited but we will do our best to reach our goals.**

NAME: SORANGE SANJURUse technology in the English classroom is so important, because it helps students to learn and practice English as Second Language. It creates the environment that students need to put in practice their prior knowledge and develop listening and speaking skills. There are advantages and disadvantages for using computer however, I think so, there are more advantages to achieve the objective in the classroom, which is students can communicate each other.
NAME. Mirna Cabeza.

I oberve in this video that students have more advantages to develop their skills in the classroom by using computer. In the video it also shows how to implement that use of computers. But the true is that in my curriculum I am short on time because I have only for period of forty minutes per week. and beside my school doesn't has computer.
